AVC-Kuwait (Assolna-Velim-Cuncolim) sponsored by Dawat Restaurant-Kuwait made history by winning the Bahrain Gulf Goans Football Tournament held on 14th November 2004 at Al Qadasiya Football Stadium in Manama Bahrain. AVC defeated Goan Welfare Association Qatar 1-0 in the finals to win the coveted trophy and thus becoming the only Goan team from Kuwait to win an outstation tournament in the modern era. All together 16 teams from Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait took part in the tournament, which were divided in 4 groups, and AVC topped group B to qualify for the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals AVC beat Canacona and in the semifinals demolished star studded and favorites Navelim 4-0. Star medio and Captain of AVC Agnelo Miranda who scored the championship goal was awarded the trophy for the highest scorer and thus proved to the goan public in the gulf that he is still the best goan player in the region having already bagged the best player award in Dubai. AVC played a total of 6 matches without conceding any goal and for this AVC’s coach, and goalkeeper Alvaro Dias was commended by the organizers for keeping a clean slate in the tournament. It was an all round performance by the AVC team with superb performance by new recruit Roland and veteran Francis Fernandes in the attack. Medio Agnelo Miranda and Duarte Ferrao mesmerized the opposition with their deft placements. Godfrey Aguiar, Elvis Camelo and Alex Sequeira marshaled the defence rock solid not allowing the opposition any space. Coach and veteran Ace goalkeeper Alvaro Dias made terrific saves to deny the opposition any chance of recovery. The tournament was conducted in a grand style by the Bahrain Goans and compliments to Gabriel Crasto and Francis Correia for their cooperation and support provided for the outstation teams. The unity amongst the goans in Bahrain was at full display, which is very rare elsewhere in the region. A word of thanks to the Chief Guest and the Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Church in Bahrain Fr. Felicio Diniz for having a special mass for the two finalists . AVC felt privileged by this gesture. It was a dream come true for the AVC team and management and this achievement will be remembered for many years to come. Congratulatory messages are still pouring in from like-minded goans and soccer aficionados. AVC team has already been invited again in Bahrain and in Qatar for future soccer tournaments. Congratulations AVC-Kuwait Team and Keep up the good work.
