For the record, the first Goan (or Indian for that matter) to step on the ice in
Antarctica was Dr. Ehlrich Desa of NIO. He did this on Jan 9, 1982.
An interesting footnote to this episode was that an Indian Army Major who was
also
on this expedition was chosen to be the first person to step on the ice, but for
some reason, this person chickened out at the last moment. He probably feared
that
he would fall through the ice into the water. Dr. Desa decided to put an end to
all
these fears and just hopped off the ship.
