Sir, As you are aware that as per a press advertisement on the local dailies in Goa a Musical evening free for all without invites function was scheduled to be organised by the dealers of Prestige Cookers, Behind Loyola High School in Margao on Liberation eve 18th november, 2004 at 19.30 p.m. it was mentioned that the MLA and CM of Goa were to grace the ocassion. The venue was not disclosed niether the organisors were accessible on the cell number mentioned in the newspaper to ascertain the location of the venue. Until the last date the confusion prevailed. It was obvious that the show would be held on an open ground because it was Goa's Konkani nightingale Ms Lorna besides another one man band to perform. However this evening it came as a surprise that the road in front of Shivneri Apts where the Presitge Cookers exclusive outlet exists was the venue of the show. We learnt from one of the organising committee members there that the function had to be held in front of the premises as per the Company requirements. The road is in a commercial-cum-residential area with two hospitals (maternity homes) close by and a reputed restaurant. Besides that it is the main arterial road for those coming from Colva Benaulim and beyond. The railway level crossing also causes queing up of vehicles on either sides of the track. May we seek your intervention and clarification on a) how was the road declared closed for vehicular movement for a private commercial function which is not in "public interest" b) even conceding that it was a two and half hour show how could the closure be permitted when a star singer who attracts masses was to perform in a restricted venue which could at best hold not more than three hundred people on a horizontal area with a breadth of just 8 mtrs road. c)was permission granted by the Municipal Council or the District magistrate for the same and is such permission valid in the circumstances listed above. Since you have graced the ocassion though for a brief period we seek the clarification on the above in "public interest" as in the humble opinion of the citizens who have contacted us this amounts to political highhandedness, and the Government machinery succumbing public interests to the "private interests" of a commercial outlet. There were also fireworks in the area for the same function. We fear that this instance will be quoted by other commercial establishments as being a precedent and similar road blockades will continue to be a regular feature Terence Mazarelo PRESIDENT (SGPIAG) sgpiag @yahoo.co.in http://mumbai.sancharnet.in/manojnd +91 832 2731373 ________________________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
