VASCO DOCTOR KIDNAPPED, FOUND DEAD: Dr Shrikant Verenkar, well-known doctor from Vasco, was kidnapped on January 17 by some unidentified, masked assailants while on his routine morning walk at 6.10 am. His body was found alter in the day lying under a mango tree in Cuelim-Cansaulim. (GT) CAUSE OF DEATH A MYSTERY: Dr Shrikant Verenkar's death under mysterious circumstances at Cuelim-Cansaulim has left the police top brass baffled as there was no trace of any injuries on his body, which was found lying under a mango tree at Cuelim hill. (GT) NEEDLE OF SUSPICION IS ON DOC'S SON-IN-LAW: "Suspicion points towards Ryan Fernandes," said Deputy Inspector General of Goa Police, Muktesh Chander, who was camping at the Vasco police station, along with senior police officers, till late Monday night. The DIG said that there was a case registered against Fernandes at the Vasco police station in November 2004, for 'trespassing and threatening' the Verenkar family, in connection with the ongoing marital conflict with his wife, the DIG added. (NT) 450TH ANNIVERSARY OF CHURCH OF REIS MAGOS: The 450th anniversary celebrations of the Church of Reis Magos was inaugurated by the Episcopal Vicar of central Zone, Fr Joseph Salema, the parish priest of Reis Magos, Fr Jose Ubaldo D'Cunha, and the representatives of all the small Christian communities of the parish by lighting the ceremonial lamp on January 6, 2005. It was also the Feast of Epiphany, commonly known as the feast of Three Kings or Reichem Fest, which is the main feast of the parish. The church was constructed in 1555 by the Franciscan friars and dedicated to the Holy Magi. It was Fr Joao Noe who offered the first mass at Verem after crossing the Mandovi in 1550 at the place where the church was constructed five years later.
