The article by Bindu Vaz is a useful reminder to us all to look at a person for what he/she is within rather than on the surface. Of course, this does not mean that one should not make oneself presentable - but that itself should not be the final goal.

I would like to add onve more episode to the list by Bindu. That is the mis-utilisation of a young girl from Jammu who was coaxed into appearing in a beauty contest, and when she won, she was black-mailed in all sorts of ways. Also, in many small towns in India this beauty pageants are also getting 'popular'.

I understand that such events are no longer popular in the West - though the contests are still held there. It is the third-world countries that are targetted, and that is why there have been so many from India who have won in the recent past, and these events are held in such countries. The whole programme seems to be to sell cosmetic products, and not the well-being of the contestants.
