Governor gives Rane 30 days to prove majorityAdd to Clippings TIMES NEWS NETWORK & AGENCIES[ TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 08, 2005 12:42:20 AM ] Sign into earnIndiatimes points NEW DELHI: Goa Governor S C Jamir on Monday said the newly installed Congress-led government in Goa has been given 30 days to prove its majority. Chief minister Pratapsinh Rane had told a press conference over the weekend that he would seek a trust vote as soon as the governor asked him to do so. On the dismissal of the government and his decision to swear in a Congress Government in the state, Jamir charged the Speaker with committing "open murder of democracy". "I cannot allow democracy being murdered on the floor of the House by using the powers of the Speaker. It amounts to open murder of democracy. Therefore, in order to safeguard Constitution .... I had to take the decision," he said. Jamir, who came under attack from the BJP and its allies in the NDA, asserted that supremacy of Speaker in the House held good as long as he followed rules and procedures. "Violation of rules and procedures, flouting of Constitution does not give him that kind of power in the House," he said. Rejecting the charge that his action was "pre-meditated", Jamir said the House was adjourned at 5:24 pm and he issued the order only after 6 pm. "So, how can they say so," he asked. Meanwhile, as part of its nationwide agitation, top BJP and other NDA leaders, including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, party President L K Advani and NDA convenor George Fernandes will be staging a dharna in New Delhi. "BJP and NDA leaders will be staging a dharna here to protest against the undemocratic and unconstitutional manner in which Goa Governor removed the BJP-Government," party leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.
