This is factually incorrect, as pointed out by the doctors Colaco and Helekar. AFAIK, there was a Thalasaemia Society in Hornsey, London, way back in 1980 (which I discovered when I walked past the building along with Oboe Noronha, who explained to me what it stood for), and probably founded a long time before that.
