Dear Fred,

Is this demography or demon-graphy?

It is all about labels like the "Arabian Sea" and the "Indian Ocean".When one tries to find their boundaries.....one is all at sea! Does one really know where hinduism ends or catholicism begins? I have watched with disbelief as Diocesan and other priests drop a coin in the thali and receive tirth and prasad from the pujari. I have heard sing devout hindu girls sing church hymns when asked to sing a song in a picnic bus, where the only compulsion was to sing...and the song was of one's choice. Hindus and Christians offer oil to Milagris Saibinn and quite a few catholics swear at Bodgueshwar and Damodar temples, specially when they become ministers or are being baited to defect. Come to Mapusa in April ,specially around the feast days[11 to 13 April] if only "seeing is believing." The oaths in the temples were publicised in February,2005, in the local newspapers..

The Hindu BJP CM of Goa was in the front row at the installation of the Archbishop while a Catholic NCP former CM and former Advisor to the Catholic Bishop Conference of India[CBCI] was lost in the multitude. The photo of the BJP CM at the inaugural of the SFX Exposition was prominently printed on the NRI Facilitation Centre's Bulletin -III issued by the BJP-led committee at the Gomant Vishwa Sammelan this January.

Catholics[ I do not know if they really qualify to be called "Christians"] from Goa have out-migrated, Hindus from the rest of India have in-migrated into India. Empowering of women has been happening since colonial days....and it has very little effect on sex or fecundity. Work pressures do not effect the number of children as the choice being exercised by normal people with some social responsibility. I do not think anyone would fall for an award for mothers that produce a dozen or more children today as they did in colonial era. Education is a powerful contraceptive. Employment and financial independence is another. Condoms are promoted to control HIV-AIDS and are freely available[ at a price].No effective Khadi condoms yet for the swadeshi but, for the desi, there is Choice or Mala-D.The TV channels take most of the fun out of sex[ though some have got interested in rapes and paedophilia....which produce few kids.] MTP is available for those who get carried away by f-TV or MTV.

One really does not know who counted whom and within what boundaries for the 1911 census. According to the 1991 census hardly anyone speaks Konkani as their mother tongue. Irritate almost anyone in Goa and the abuse flows smoothly in Konkani even to this day. "Lies, damned lies, and statistics" are not my words. They have been said before.
