MALA VANDALISM CASE REOPENED: In a major development, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) here recently granted permission to the city police to re-open investigations into the Mala Vandalism case, even as two persons allegedly involved in the incident were interrogated. Former champion body builder Datta Palekar and BJP MLA Vishwas Satarkar's brother, Vilas, were interrogated by the Panaji police. Police said efforts might prove fruitless if eyewitnesses do not come forward. Palekar, it was said, had stated to police that the person seen in a photograph published in the Konkani daily 'Sunaparant' and reproduced in the 'Gomantak Times' was not him, and that he does not know anyone pictured in the photograph. (GT) This case involves pro-saffron campaigners vandalising name-boards in the Latin Quarter of the state capital. Major changes have been made in the Gomanteshwar temple at Bhramapuri in Old Goa. Sadollxi temple in Canacona is slated for demolition. Likewise several churches and chapels are being demolished and 'renovated' -- at Corjuem, Chandor, Benaulim, Colva, Nuvem, etc. (H) This is being done in the guise of 'renovating' and enlarging the age-old structures, while destroying their character.
