IN TODAY'S EZINE: Politics heats as, as they come to get your votes -- prior
to the June 2 bye-elections for five out of Goa's 40 seats. This is going to
be a crucial election, with the BJP trying to wrest power back and the
Congress hoping that being in power in New Delhi will help the party here.

MONTE CRUZ IS UGDP's BENAULIM BET: Former Congress Sports minister
Francisco Monte Cruz will be the United Goans Democratic Party's
candidate for the Benaulim seat in the June 2 bye-elections. In the
remaining four seats the UGDP made it clear that though the party
hasn't decided on its candidates, it had decided to give topmost
priority to defeat the BJP in the hustings. (H) Bye-elections are
being held for five of the Goa legislative assembly's 40 seats after
these fell vacant by a series of defections which toppled the BJP
government of Goa earlier this year. The BJP itself came to power
nearly half-a-decade ago by engineering defections, and getting the
support of smaller parties and independents.
