----------------------------------------------------------------- Socorro Residents Take To The Streets Submit Memorandum On Construction Licences, Water Supply And Garbage ----------------------------------------------------------------
Residents of Socorro village staged a dharna recently in front of Socorro panchayat and submitted a memorandum to Sarpanch Anand Mandrekar demanding that the panchayat should not issue construction licences for multiple housing complexes in Socorro village until the PWD ensures the residents of at least six hours daily water supply in all seasons.
It has been mentioned in the memorandum that the Socorro residents have been facing immense physical hardships and mental agony due to erratic water supply by the PWD. They are receiving water every alternate day but that too not in sufficient quantity-While the people are suffering for water the tankers are doing roaring business and the filling of water in the tankers at the PWD water tank near O'Coqueiro has now, become a regular feature.
Further the water tankers are also drawing water from the wells in Socorro village and selling it as a result of which wells in Socorro village are drying up. When the PWD cannot satisfy the need of the existing customers there is no point in the village panchayat issuing construction licenses indiscriminately for huge housing complexes thereby further increasing the miseries of existing residents claimed the agitating residents.
They have also demanded that panchayat should clear garbage everyday and deposit the same at the notified garbage site as required under the Goa Bio-degradable Act. The memorandum states that the village of Socorro has been facing a garbage problem and that every dust bin installed is overflowing as they are not cleared for several days.
This issue has been raised at the gramsabhas several times but the panchayat has not taken, any steps to far to find permanent solution for this garbage problem. The contractors engaged by the panchayat are burning the garbage in the bins itself thus causing pollution of the environment.
The residents have also demanded that the panchayat should make it mandatory for the construction companies to provide, toilet facilities for their labourers, besides also checking the sewage system of the buildings as most of the septic tanks of buildings are overflowing.
They have also expressed concern about the increasing number of accidents on the stretch of road from Alto-Porvorim market to O Coqueiro junction and hence demanded that the panchayat should take up this issue also with the traffic police to enforce observance of pedestrian crossing and initiate steps to check the speeding vehicles. -------------------------------- HERALD 3/05/05 page 4 --------------------------------
