Debate: What does the aviation sector need from government? Engine overhaul needed Policy must push ancillary industry for low-cost travel to take off CAPT GOPINATH [Air Deccan] Posted online: Thursday, June 09, 2005 at 0000 hours IST <Low-cost airlines can make do with low-cost terminals and air side facilities, without Aero bridges, so that airplanes can wing in and out on their own power without push back, and get out of the airport in less than 25 minutes to 30 minutes turnaround time. This may need systematic changes in the airports, the way they are structured and function as they are not hungry for revenue and growth. A different approach is required for regional airports and airstrips. We already have nearly 400 airports and airstrips in the country that are striving for connectivity. The government must conserve its scarce resources and prioritise it. Here the priority must go to runways and equipment for air traffic control, rather than fancy buildings which look good for inauguration by VIPs.>
