I cced that email to some people with whom I was discussing the
issue of urban legends, when your post arrived in my
trash box.

Santosh, you don’t cease to amuse me. You say, you read my mail from the trash box? Is this some kind of stand-up comedy? Did your trash-box instantly alert you that there was something interesting in it for you? :)

How true: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! You certainly proved it, by picking up my post (from your trash box) and treasuring it. Thanks, Santosh!

You are wrong! I labeled Cynthia's copied and pasted
material as an urban legend, not a chain letter.

Santosh, I hope the following post (also) did not auto-land in your trash box:

While it's true that this story is quite exaggerated, it hardly falls into the typical "scam".

Peter,

It is not a typical scam. But it is not simply an
exaggeration either. It is an urban legend
containing outright deceptions and blatant falsehoods. Do
you want to excuse people (or encourage them) for
spreading "inspiring" urban legends
and chain emails

through Goanet?

Ok, Santosh you did not label Cynthia’s post as chain LETTER but alluded it to be a chain EMAIL? It is hard to make the system lie – and one cannot hide no matter how hard one may try … saying I did NOT say that. Now, I am sure you will come up with some kind of elusive validation that although you said chain email…you did not actually label Cynthia’s post as such.

Ok, considering your claim that you said was “copied and pasted”. Pray tell us did you not also copy paste this link: >> http://www.snopes.com/glurge/57cents.asp

Santosh, how reliable is your source? Can you in fact prove beyond the shadow of doubt that what your source (link) depicted was in essence -- the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Is your source infallible in as much as your theories are?

Did someone point out that Santosh’s source (link) was NOT as credible as it was made out to be? Ref: <http://library.temple.edu/collections/special_collections/hattie.htm>

And Santosh cannot prove/disprove it either way.

So can we rely on copy paste links to approve or disapprove a story, and be so cynical and display a condescending attitude towards the poster? Cynthia’s story was nothing but harmless yet inspiring, with a moral to share.

Most people on that cc list have thanked me for giving them advance notice
because they subscribe to the digest version of
Goanet, and do not read every post.

Santosh, are you saying your friends are ignoring (not reading) your posts from the digest version of Goanet, therefore, you have to pointedly bring it to their attention? ;)

I doubt not that the profuse appreciation by your friends was indeed reciprocal. Bet, you also received a standing ovation from the recipients of those advance ccs. Believe, they would have totally missed your post from the digest version of Goanet, had you not cced them. Perhaps, somehow your post would have also auto-landed in their trash box, and so it was a good thing that you cced them.

After all, I find that this was not all a wasted exercise. Well, I have learned something for sure. I have learned how some netters lobby other netters/friends for support and strategize to browbeat anyone who differs with what they profess. No wonder there is something called the popular net-vote/support by using the clandestine lobbying technique. This practice is skillfully perfected and successfully employed in politics; why not apply it on Goanet?

I was cautioned about this tactic sometime back by a friend. Now I can see why!

Who is the author of the subject email? … I would be happy to
email my post to him/her, if he/she is interested.

You are asking me who the author is? After participating in several episodes of the Ram/Sita story, you are asking: who is Ram? :)

The point I was making all along is that there was no cause for undue distress or panic in Cynthia’s post i.e. “Acres of Diamonds.” I don’t think I was the only one who saw it that way; there are several other netters who advised you that it serves NO purpose. You are indeed making a mountain out of a mole hill.

The bottom line is: Lose the story (if you must) but not the lesson!

Now, Santosh perhaps you have better things to do other than picking up trash/garbage from trash-boxes and dwelling on it. I have important things to do. I have made my point; you obviously tried making yours.

Wish you well!

Joe Vaz
