Hi Goans Everywhere, I just discovered this book at Crosswords (Kemp's Corner) published in 1998 by Penguin Books India.
Patricia is an Anglo-Indian, daughter of an Indian Army officer, who was transported around various military bases in India finally finishing school at Jesus & Mary Convent, Pune. She spent most of her summer holidays at her Grand-parents, Peters, farm at Burhanpur. She, with her husband and three sons, migrated to Canada in 1969. Before starting on the recipes, none of which I have attempted, her introduction to the history and way of life of Anglo-Indians is most interesting and enlightening. Her description of the Anglo-Indian way of life strikes a familiar cord of memory to me as we lived fairly similarly particularly if you had grown up in Rangoon (Burma), Calcutta, of any of the various railway colonies and military camps anywhere in India. She describes so accurately how we celebrated Christmas, New Year and Easter -- together with the religious background associated with these feasts -- and also the various celebrations associated with one's life stages -- birth, Christening, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders, Anointing the Sick and finally Death. Her recipes include, what we today call INDIAN FOOD -- tandoori chicken, biryani, rasam, aloo bonda, falooda, gulab jamuns, Maharashtrian curry, moorku(chukli), lassi, various baggias/ pakoras, raita, puran polis, amti, sambar, mulligatawny, etc Some of what I would consider Goan dishes also feature, e.g. vindaloo, sorpotel, prawn balchow, pork assado, pancakes (ale`-beli), kul-kuls, Goa fish curry, vegetable foogath, fish moley, chicken shakuti, beef buffath, etc She speaks in the introduction, of her recipes: "Since my efforts are begged, borrowed and 'nicked' If you see yourself in here, by gosh, you were picked." If you can lay your hands on this book, or better still, 'nick' it -- I am sure you will enjoy the book and, depending on how good a cook you are, end up with a variety of new dishes to add to your repertoire. I would welcome any feedback from those who try out the various recipes -- I will then get my young ladies to try out that recipe. Cheers Aloysius
