The Konkani press is highlighting the fact that the film Aleesha won a prize. But is this cause for celebration? Two Konkani films get made in 2004 (after years, in part because of the IFFI being hurriedly staged in Goa by then CM Manohar Parrikar, to make a point). One gets an award.
This is an award specially slotted for Konkani itself. Is this something to be proud of, or just a reflection of the sad state of the politicised cultural mores that dominate in Goa? Obviously something is going wrong somewhere. While local culture needs to be promoted, can we afford to get unduly celebratory? -FN ------------------------------------------------------------------- 30.
