He was implicated in the "Conjuracao dos Pintos" (aka the Pinto revolt), which was not necessarily a revolt for "freedom", but nevertheless a revolt against the hierarchy of the time, in Goa. He indirectly, like Francisco Luis Gomes, put Goa on the world map, as one may say, by way of promoting hypnotism as a scientific topic rather than as a side show at a circus.
