No. It was not a historic necessity. It was an accident of history. 

Comparing the atrocities commited by one group of people against another or 
against themselves because of their religious beliefs is a pointless and 
foolish exercise. It can never be done with any semblance of objectivity. 
One form of sectarian fanaticism cannot be balanced or countered by another. 

Any social progress that we have made, whether in the East or the West, has 
been largely because of the achievement of a better understanding of 
humanity guided by reason and objective knowledge, and because of the 
humanitarian reforms that this understanding has brought about.
