PLANT UTSAV 2005

Kiss of life for Panjim Municipal Garden
Vegetable eating, coconut peeling, photography, slogan writing, poster
painting! All this and more at Plant Utsav 2005. The Corporation of the City
of Panaji (CCP) and the Botanical Society of Goa (BSG) are presenting the
annual Plant Utsav at the Garcia da Orta Municipal Garden, Panaji after a
year's gap. It will be held from Friday 18 November to Sunday 20 November.
The Goa Forest Department, ICAR-Goa, the Directorate of Agriculture and
Department of Science, Technology & Environment are once again doing their
bit. The Western Ghats Kokum Foundation is likely to join the Utsav too. The
focus this year will be on Plant-based Medicines and Biodegradable Solids
Management through projects and competitions at the school and college
levels.
Plant fun for everyone
No matter who you are, or how old, there are competitions for everyone.
Slogan writing(Entries should reach BSG by 30 October 2005.)
Poster painting(Entries should reach BSG by 30 October 2005.)
Essay writing(Entries should reach BSG by 30 October 2005.)
Project Display for High School, Higher Secondary School and college levels
for each of the competition items. Project outlines should reach BSG by 30
October 2005. The project is to be brought to the venue on Thursday 17
November by 4.00 P.M.
Photography Competition open to all. Suitably mounted and captioned
photographs in 12" x 8" (30 x 20 cm) should be brought to the venue on 18
November by 09.00 A.M. Prizes for this set of competitions will be arranged
by the CCP.
Potted medicinal plants Demonstration of medicine paste, poultice, etc. for
High School, HSS and College levels. Points will be allotted for the proper
identification of the plant with its local, Hindi/Sanskrit and botanical
names, plant parts used for particular ailments and the method of preparing
the medication. This matter should be neatly written or typed on an A-4 size
paper. Sheet protector covers and cello tape will be provided by the
organisers, if needed. There will be prizes for individual entries as well
as for the institutions that present entries that gain the most points in
these competitions.

Ixora, Rose, Bougainvillea, Impatiens,Others/Miscellaneous. Each entry must
have at least one blooming flower
Ornamentals competition Ferns, Cycads, Conifers, Crotons, Palms, Aroids,
Others/Miscellaneous There will be no competition in bonsai and cacti. No
potted plant will be accepted as an entry if there is more than one type of
plant in the pot, the plant is freshly potted, and the pot is not cleaned or
is freshly painted with oil paint.
On the spot competitons: flower arrangement, fruit decor, flower petals
rangoli and vegetable eating (fresh carrots, cucumbers and radish, by
weight). There will be a mature coconut peeling competition (without
implements or stone, by time) for adults and a vegetable fancy dress for
primary school students on Saturday/Sunday. The competitors have to bring
their own materials.
