Goa was conquered/liberated by military action codenamed "Operation Vijay" on 18-19 December, 1961. This process did not begin or end with the Bombay/Mumbai diaspora. In fact the whole Freedom Fighter system is a populist scheme of the local government, blocking seats and posts well after the female and male menopause should have prevented real freedom fighters from having offsprings eligible for these seats/posts. The new FF declared during the Parrikar era may not draw pension but their children stand to benefit. One of these FFs was reportedly just 9 years old at the time of Liberation.
Plastic free Goa will be just great. I fail to understand the love for plastic where glass/ceramic/leaf containers would serve the purpose eg. teacups, plates, soda/soft drink bottles, etc. Do we really need disposable syringes?? We need to focus on the use of the alternatives rather than harping on the ban. Legislation stops nothing: hooch, cigarettes, prostitutes, plastics.....it only makes it less affordable....and more desirable. The area around the signboards that read" PLASTIC FREE ZONE" in Old Goa are littered with plastic and bars operate from houses and flats on dry days. Sometimes the soda is in short supply, not the spirit. To that extent one has to drink 'dry' on dry days. 02 October was one such day in Goa. Viva Goa. Miguel
