Nobody contests the usefulness, the naturalness, the Indianness, the .........the... the...of the Nagri script, but the pro-Romi section wants that Romi also should be accommodated in the scheme of things. Immediately then the question arises. Why? Ask the Romi supporters. They have many reasons. But my mind goes to one of the popular konkani songs sung by Joe Rose titled "kiteak lagonu" and the answer he gives is "duddvank lagonu". There is also a saying in konkani "zor roddta pejek". To me Mr.Bhembro in his talk appeared to be more of a lawyer than a linguist. In fact he dwelt for quite a long time on the economics of printing/ publishing of books in konkani. Behind every issue economics is the main criterion.Probably he meant the opposite of what he was saying because many of these Devnagari writers seem to be doing very well for themselves. But keeping that aside his road map speaks of three generations hence when the Romi group says we are already here. I think 'tis fair enough to give them also a share of the pie and stop this fight. I can never forget the words of one foreign returned Goan - and please dont keep on repeating that phrase "crab mentality". It's an insult to the crabs. They have changed their habits. Check out - wherever there are three Goans there will be two associations and the third one will be debating which one to join. How very true! Viva Richard Cabral
