Future Focus Foundation -- www.f2foundation.org -- a non-profit and social enterprise in education based in Gujarat, came out with this interesting concept. They put out an 'education-related' calendar for 2006. Printed in simple black-and-white format, this 16-page calendar has images of great educators... to remind us that "ideas and visions cannot be held by by the boundaries of nation and state". So it pays tribute to great names in education. As f2foundation puts it, "Each month evokes the ideas of educators, from lands near and far, in fields as diverse as music, philosophy, art, science, and mathematics, as well as the visions of those who were moved by the lives of people around them." Why a calendar? It notes: "It is said that an evolved human being acquires a halo, and this finds representation in popular calendar art depicting gods and goddesses in the streets of India. In real life however, halos are invisible, but there are vibrations that continue to echo for centuries. The Buddha lived nearly two thousand and six hundred years ago, but the isnights that he arrived at continue to inspire lives across nations." How true! So, this calendar has pictures of Savitribai Phule (b 3 January 1831, the pioneer of education for sub-altern girls in Maharashtra), Rudolph Steiner (b 25 February 1861, who inspires the Waldorf schools), Samour Papert (b 1 March 1928, mathematician and early pioneer of artificial intelligence), Mary Wollstonecraft (b 27 April 1759,now recognized as a great writer across a range of genres, including journalism, letters, and travel writing), Jiddu Krishnamurthi (b 12 May 1895), philosopher Jean Jacques Rosseau (b 28 June 1712), Emile Jaques-Dalcroze (b 6 July 1865, founder of the Dalcroze Method of teaching musical concepts through movement), Maria Montessori (b 31 August 1870, who argued in favour of creating a nurturing climate for children, rather than teaching them), Ivan Illich (b 4 September 1926), John Dewey (b 20 October 1859), Gijubhai Badheka (b 9 Nov 1885), and Mortimer Adler (b 28 December 1902, who tried to bring philosophy to the masses with his 'How to Read A Book' and other initiatives.) If you're looking out for a gift for an educator-friend around the New Year, this could be one. It's priced reasonably at Rs 25, and can be got from www.f2foundation.org or [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Laxman Mohanty). -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Frederick Noronha 784 Near Convent, Sonarbhat SALIGAO GOA India Independent Journalist TEL: +91-832-2409490 MOBILE: 9822122436 [] Check out my bookmarks at http://del.icio.us/fredericknoronha ...
