I am thankful to the suggestion of Mendo Castro Henriques, but the purpose of my essay was to concentrate on the performance of D. José Costa Nunes (as the most prominent Azorean prelate among many in Asia) in India. If I provided some additional information about D. Jose Costa Nunes before and after his Goan interregnum, it was merely to contextualise his performance as archbishop-patriarch in Goa. I am fully aware that no research is ever complete or can handle all aspects of a theme. Research is always a cooperative job of many and will always need correction and updating. II wish Mendo Castro Henriques could explain to Goanet readers what he means by Grande Oriente Lusitano or on what sources Pe. Manuel Texeira (whom I have known personally since 1980s while he was still in Macau) based his knowledge about the help rendered by D. Jose Costa Nunes to bring the Bishop of Porto back from exile. I have read that D. Jose Costa Nunes felt cheated by Salazar after having cooperated with him to take the bishop to Rome, apparently for a short period of time! I have followed a more recent research publication (than the research of Pe. Manuel Teixeira, whom I tend to compare with our late Msg. Gomes Catão in Goa) entitled "Relações entre a Igreja e o Estado" (Porto, 2001) wherein the Case of the Bishop of Porto is discussed in quite some depth by Antonio Texeira Fernandes, Professor at the Unversity of Porto I have not come across there to any reference to D. Jose costa Nunes as belonging to Grande Oriente Lusitano or to his help in bringing the Bishop of Porto back from exile. It looks as if I am not the only one who forgot about such interesting or curious facets of D. Jose Costa Nunes. Souza has not explored the well known fact that D. Jose da Costa Nunes belonged to Grande Oriente Lusitano and that he helped to bring D. Ferreira Gomes back to Portugal.
