New Delhi: The union cabinet today approved declaration of the existing airport at Jaipur as an international one. This will offer improved connectivity and wider choice of services at competitive rates to air travelers, said finance minister P Chidambaram after the cabinet meeting. The move will result in boosting international tourism and economic development of the region, he said. It will also open up the pink city to global chartered flights. Jaipur airport doubles up as an alternative landing site every winter for most Delhi-bound international flights that are diverted due to thick fog. The airport will be upgraded to handle planes like the Boeing 747 and adequate customs and immigration counters. An airport should have a minimum runway length of 11,000 to 12,000 feet, and be capable of 24-hour operations with adequate approach lighting, to be declared an international airport.
