Wife clubs drunken hubby to death

HERALD CORRESPONDENT
VALPOI, JAN 10 — Their 10-year-old marriage, which began in elopement
came to a heinous end, when a woman clubbed her husband to death at
Kasarwada-Morlem in Sattari.
The murder of Gurudas Tukaram Gaonkar (35) by his wife Ujwala
Kashinath Sawant (30) has shocked the village and is the second murder
to strike Sattari taluka within a fortnight, following the murder of
Pritviraj Rane, which sparked off riots in Saleli-Honda, which is
about 10 kms from Morlem village.

Besides arresting Ujwala on charges of murder, Valpoi police has also
arrested her brother, Dayanand.
Chandrakant Gaonkar had informed Valpoi police on Monday, stating that
his brother, Gurudas, was missing since January 2.
Acting on suspicion, police arrested Ujwala and during interrogation,
she spilled the beans and confessed that she had murdered her husband
by attacking him with an iron rod on January 2.
Informing police that she had reportedly taken an oath to kill her
husband if he came home drunk, Ujwala also told the police that she
had buried the body in the banana plantation behind their house.
Ujwala stated that she had complained about her husband's inebriated
behaviour to her in-laws, but said they were unable to control him.
She added that they had eloped 10 years ago and had got married.
Locals told Herald that Gurudas was to be honoured at a village
gathering on January 7 and his disappearance was noticed by villagers
only when he did not turn up to collect his award.
A Valpoi police team, led by PI Sandesh Chodankar and supervised by SP
Vishram Borkar, DySP Shamba Sawant, went to the site along with Deputy
Collector Arvind Bugde, Dr Silvano Sapeco and Dr Madhu of GMC, and
Morlem Sarpanch Vasala Gaonkar.
Police then exhumed the partially decomposed body, which was wrapped
in bedsheets and a mat, from the 5-foot-deep grave. A banana sapling
had been planted above the grave to conceal the body. The body was
then shifted to the GMC hospital for an autopsy.
