Bangalore: The elevated expressway on the Bangalore-Hosur National Highway will commence next month, connecting the Electronic city to southern Bangalore, Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K H Muniyappa said today. Talking to newspersons after a review of the National Highway projects in Karnataka, he said three contractors had been awarded with the contract for the Rs 450 crore project taken up to ensure easy access to the electronic city where a number of IT companies have set up offices. The project had been taken up at the behest of the IT companies which had been complaining about traffic irritants on the National Highway. He said work had also been initiated under the Golden Quadrilateral project and North South Corridor project that would cover a distance of 457 km in the state. The projects would be taken up at a cost of Rs 2,400 crore. In addition, four-laning of the Belgaum-Goa highway would also be taken up at a cost of Rs 900 crore, he added. Mr Muniyappa said the committee on infrastructure headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had taken a decision to develop the national highways under seven phases in the next seven years at a cost of Rs.172,000 crore. During Phase four 20,000 km would be two-laned along with a provision of hard paved shoulders. The UPA government had given a fillip to the National Highways Development programme and taken it forward. He said the New Mangalore Port Trust would be connected to NH 48 by providing a four-link from Suratkal to Bantwal under the port connectivity programme.
