UNQUOTE: --------------------------------------------------------- IT WOULD be the proverbial last straw before I decide to call it quits. No more advocacies, no more petitioning, no more writing on this subject. The battle to save the Goa University campus, certainly the last oasis of greenery and biodiversity in the Tiswadi island, is over. At least for me. It is an absolutely hopeless situation. Adorned with huge rolling carpets of black carbon soot, hundreds of burnt and charred trees, bushes, vegetation, dead birds and animals, destroyed habitats -- it is virtually a war zone. I was never overwhelmed by such an overpowering feeling of frustration and utter uselessness. It is a sort of punishment to reside in the campus and, every day, engage in a battle for survival when something invariably turns up and makes you restless, concerned, alarmed, provided you've not lost the sensitivity. -- Nandkumar Kamat, in NT article titled 'Eco-vandalism in the University Campus' --------------------------------------------------------- CRIME/ACCIDENTS: --------------------------------------------------------- o Tourists looted at knife-point in Vagator. Each region has its own unique cuisine with its own special flavor. Lavash is the national thin, paper like bread of Armenians. It is baked in tonir (similar to a tandoor oven) and they are so transparent that it is said that the sunrays pass through them. Armenians use it also as a plate, a saucepan, a spoon. Many dishes are cooked on mild fire, covered with lavash. Traditionally Armenians eat their food folded in lavash. Take a look at the following recipe: Lavash 5-1/2 cups nonfat milk, 2 teaspoon salt, 2 eggs, 2 packets active dry yeast, 6 tablespoons sugar, 1 pount good-quality margarine, melted, 5 lbs flour, sifted, 1 T black caraway seeds, picked over (discard anything that is not black). Heat milk and let cool to about 120 F. Place 1 cup heated milk in bowl and stir in yeast. Set aside 5 minutes until bubbly. Add sugar and salt to remaining milk and stir until dissolved. Place flour in large bowl and stir in sugar-milk mixture. Add yeast mixture, stirring lightly, then add melted margarine. Mix until well combined, then knead until stiff dough is formed. Place dough in greased bowl. Cover with dampened cloth. Set aside in warm place until double in bulk. Punch dough down. Cover again and let rise again until double in bulk. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface. Divide into several portions. Roll each out to 1/2" thickness. Cut dough with 3" round cutter (or use a glass or cup to form biscuits). Place on lightly greased baking sheets. Beat eggs or process in blender. Transfer to small bowl and stir in black caraway seeds. With brush, coat tops of biscuits with mixture, spreading seeds as evenly as possible over surface. Bake at 350 F until golden brown, about 30 minutes.
