Following Erich von Danniken's train of thought, the
cross could also symbolise a communication aerial
(though with whom the ancients communicated is
something that requires further study? Or may be they
imitated something they saw some other beings do? ).

So also the gold one-piece simple crown worn by the
ancient Kings and symbolised as floating on top of
saints' heads in pictures (the aura). 

Just my thoughts, however bizarre they may appear to
be ...

However, crucifiction of a man called Jesus (Joshua)
has been chronicled in Jewish history (Josefus?) ...
