With reference to FN's mail on the subject, first of all let me say I am honoured to be even in the same cyber space as the renowned Frederick Noronha. I have great respect for your work and your opinions.
I agree that certain words have acquired a derogatory connotation like poder, but I don't know if Kokno is one of them. In Salcette at least, we would use to refer to a Hindu, its connotation to be referenced only by the context. There is however, the larger issue, that in my father's generation atleast, a general condescension existed for the Hindu community. As the journalist Sardesai rightly pointed out, so-called communal harmony existed in Goa only because the two communities didn't interact at all or other than in a superficial manner. This generation is the first generation that is now called upon to rise to the occasion of forming true communal harmony which involves co-existing in the most profound sense of the word. And this is where the cracks are beginning to appear. Now, we have to do the real work of tolerating other religions, cultures and ethnicities both from the Hindu and the Christian side. For our sake, I hope we succeed. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
