Cornel, I don't have any statistics here but to the best of my knowledge and my father's recollection, many "Batkars" left for Portugal, leaving nothing more than a mudkar to look after their properties. It is at this juncture, that many Mudkars illegally and aided by the government's "land to the tiller" rule, acquired their Batkar's land. Many of these Batkars and their progeny spoke Portuguese as their first language and they didn't see a future for themselves in an Indian Goa. Elisabeth -------------------
