Hi Eddie
At least you had a test of sorts to obtain an Indian driving license. I was told by a very pleasant fellow in Margao that a test was unnecessary as I had driven for many years outside India but also in India on the International Permit to drive when visiting another country. All I was asked for was a certain amount of cash! I found this repugnant and decided that I could do without an Indian driving license. Moreover, taxis became preferrable when vehicular density and congestion got really bad, despite the availability of a car at home in Goa.

PS Some time ago, I found driving in Turkey, even in the main cities, worse than in India. There must be many other places so bad that, driving in India may be deemed to be perfectly OK! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mario Goveia" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I use a self-drive car during my annual visit to Goa
and though I have a British Driving licence, I decided
to apply for one in Goa in order to acquire yet
another local identity document. The test was
absolutely pathetic. In the oral part the examiner
asked me what I should do before overtaking. I listed
the checks I would make but he was not satisfied and
kept on repeating the question. I listed a few more
cautions but he was still not content. I finally gave
up and asked him what else I should do. "Blow the
horn, BLOW THE HORN," he screamed in my ear.

Eddie,
First of all, kudos for driving yourself, which shows
you have some cajones. Most expats are too afraid to
drive in India. Many locals are afraid as well. But
I found your comments above hilarious.

Those of you who expect these attitudes to change in
India are as CRAZY as every driver in India, even
those who become perfectly normal and reasonable
citizens as soon as they park their cars.

As soon as you people realize that the only rule in
India is not to hit anything, then maybe you will all
relax and live longer.

Eddie, the horn blowing is MANDATORY, to tell everyone
else that there's another MANIAC in the vicinity that
they need to watch out for:-))

Haven't you seen the sign behind every truck in India,
"BLOW HORN - PLEASE"? Get it? PLEASE!!!
