Domnic Fernandes continues (Part III) his reminiscence of
                       Mapusa of the 1950s

The Palki of Vital Rakhumai visited Betim, so did Yama the god of death.
While one was in a palanquin, the other dispensed of his buffalo and rode in
a Maruti Omni car for a change. The fire-crackers announced his arrival and
two brothers ...Deeptesh [meaning 'god of light']Sawant aged 14 years and
Dheeraj[ meaning 'courage'] Sawant aged 10 years... went up in smoke. They
were sacrificed for the sake of the celebration. How else can one view their
deaths??

Meanwhile, three other teenagers Kedar Sawant and Bhavesh Fadte, both aged
14 years , and Aditya Sawant aged 16 years have suffered serious burn
injuries and will most likely follow their brothers to Yamraj.

The Maurit Omni, driven by Virappa Karade as per the newspaper reports, had
two more minor girls on the front seat. Fortunately they escaped unhurt.
Should the driver, Virappa Karade, and the owner of the vehicle GA-01-N-9955
also escape
the long arm of the law? There will be provisions under the Explosives Act
prohibiting the transport of explosive crackers in a passenger vehicle, of
taking it to crowded areas and having minors handle them. Will the local
police file these criminal cases before the competent authorities?? The
organisers of the 'palki' also cannot wash their responsibility even if they
manage to transfer the guilt as "an act of God" as is often done to shift
responsibility of wrong doing.

May the souls of the dead brothers not rest in peace till those guilty of
negligence that caused their death are brought to book.

Miguel Braganza.
