http://www.goanfoods.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ART, GREED AND GOAN CULTURE Today, marks F.N. Souzas 82nd Birth Anniversary. In the realm of creativity, eccentricity is genius temperament and rejection is the price one pays for it. Greed, on the other hand is like an innocuous egg, virtually indistinct in the nests of most investors until it suddenly hatches into a debaucherous ostrich. One of Souzas lamenting aspiration during his lifetime was the absence and realization of a Souza museum in Goa or India. This orphaned aspiration haunted Souza to his grave. Or as V.M. de Malar so aptly characterized this folly in his piece The Million Dollar Gift (www.goanet.org/index.php? name=News&file=article&sid=425): Our unthinking Goan government has done nothing to treat our great artists in the manner they deserve, and we the unenlightened Goan people have done nothing to properly celebrate our own One might also include investors currently getting an unprecedented return on their Souza investments to that egregious list. However, it would seem fair and all the more incumbent upon the Souza Estate which also stands to rake in millions of dollars over the years to materially consider the setting up of a Souza Museum in Goa, before its own collection of irreplaceable Souzas gets irreversibly traded for compounding wealth at Christies and Sothebys. The opportunity is already inherent in the Souza Estate to not only fulfil Souzas bereaved aspiration, but to extend it by promoting in his name and honor other ignored, needy and deserving artists. Or even take this objective a notch or two higher by sponsoring the Fontainhas Art Festival. Otherwise, Souza will merely be an icon for Goans to look upon with adulation and no cultural return or benefit.
