Goa government will "soon" set up a social harmony peace committee
"which will enthuse the general population with the spirit fo social
harmony in the State", says an official release from the Department of
Information and Publicity, dated May 2.
Says the note: "The Government has arrived at a decision of setting up
of these committees in the wake of recent disturbances in Goa, as it
was felt that the Government needed to explore the possibility of
setting up taluka and ward committees to propagate living together in
peace and maintaining Goa's time-cherished tradition of peace and
harmony."
Chief Secretary JP Singh, who has taken a keen interest in the setting
up of these committees has fixed an address by Julio Ribeiro (IPS,
Retired) on May 3 at 11 am in the Seminar Hall of the Secretariat at
Porovorim for citizens, government officers, magistrates and police
officers to guide and help the Goa government work out a concrete
action plan for setting up taluka and ward peace committees all over
Goa.
Ribeiro, former Maharasthra Director General of Police and Goan by
origin, is credited with having done pioneering work in setting up
Mohalla Peace Committees in Maharashtra and elsewhere.
The address will be at 11 am at the ground floor of the new
secretariat, says the press note.
