Child Labour in Goa

There are many children in age group 13-16years work in Goa too.
They don't just work 8 hrs a day or 6 days a week but many of them work for
av,13hrs
a day and 7 days a week. Their av. earning for 12 hrs is Rs.90 per day or shift.

Almost all of the them are migrant children either from other Indian states
like
Karnataka, Maharastra, Karnatak, Bihar, UP or neighbouring country like Nepal.

It is very common in hotels jobs, Security jobs, Constructions jobs and other
areas
like vegetable markets etc.

Poverty is not always the main reason for child labour. When asked a child of
14 why
you work at this young age? he replied ' he (his mother) is saving for his
sister's
wedding who is 13'. His other two elder brothers working in Goa too plus mom &
dad
and they have their house in Chimbel.

In an another case, one working in the vegetable market Panaji who starts at
6am and
finished at 8.30pm (14.5hrs) the the employer pays him Rs.100 on daily basis,
he too
is 14 and his other family members (elder to him) are working too.

16 years old boy who is working as a security (at a residential complex) who
works
av.13 hrs a day/ 7 days a week and gets Rs.2500 per month. And if the second
person
does not turns up then he does 24-25hrs shift.
He came to Goa 3 years ago from Nepal. He too says Goa pay is good.

Goa has become a heaven for child labour and the employers will do their level
best
to exploit it. They hire and fire them just like that as they know there are
abundant supply of labour in Goa and that too very cheap.

JoeSays:
It seems their parents bringing their children into this world as investment so
that
they can send them to work as young as 12 for money. Parent's duty is to send
their
children to school, there are plenty free Schools in Goa but greedy parents
prefer
to send them to work instead. However, it appears that they only take
advantage of
our free Goa Medical/hospital facilities and not schools.
Goa government should identify such children and then they should either be
sent to
school or back to where they come from. Or else, more and more children will
migrate
to Goa for money and this could even result in more and more tourists coming to
Goa
for 'Child sex' .
Goa Govt. should act now.
