Joe, you're going off-track and derailing the discussion. All that I say is that you obviously
don't understand the nuances of the issues

Dear Fred:

On one hand you tell Goans that “we get the media we deserve,” and on the other hand you say it is patently unfair to be critical of the press, —because we don’t understand the nuances of the issues? What are these “nuances of the issues” you are referring to?

[FN says:] Don't get me wrong: I'm not defending the media in Goa.
When you get down to looking at it, you could possibly
find out that the crisis is far more serious than you make it out to be. All that I'm pointing out is that it's patently unfair
to jump to conclusions without even studying the issue at hand …

[JV] Fred, why can’t you be clear and upfront with what you intend to say: You are asserting that — “the crisis is far more serious than you make it out to be” — then hastily you add that “it’s patently unfair to jump to conclusions without even studying the issue at hand…”

1. What is this “crisis” you are referring to, but conveniently failing to explain? and
2. What is this “issue” that you want the reader/s to study?

Are you saying that the “crisis” is far more serious, but we should do nothing and bury our heads in the sand, pretending there is no crisis (or issue)?

How do you deduce that I read only your posts on Goanet, and do not read other Goa news and/or have no knowledge of other journalists’ writings? Are you really telling us that you can *read people’s mind,* albeit from a distance? ;-)

[FN: As far as trying to rake up a competition of sorts
among different posters from Goa, I won't fall for that.

[JV] Now, isn’t the above statement humorous? Fred, you don’t have to fall for it! No one is raking up any ‘competition among posters from Goa’ — at least to the best of my knowledge. But for the sake of argument, is competition such a bad idea? Would “alternative journalism” create panic, and pose an impending threat to the news media and journalists?

My belief is good professional journalism will always prevail. However, “alternative journalism” (your term) will segregate the wheat from the chaff. It will promote people with the right head and the right heart entering the profession, rather than those who want to be journalists for the wrong reasons.

I have no doubt that you are an honorable man as well as an intelligent one; a prolific writer and journalist. But being emotive isn’t of any use. It only blurs one’s thinking and inhibits sound reasoning.

Finally, Fred, you have implicitly or explicitly agreed that bad journalism is practiced in Goa. I am positive you know that, and there is no point in denying it.

Regards,
Joe Vaz
