Within hours of taking over as the new Commissioner of
Customs & Central Excise, Goa on 13th July, Mr. Sheo
Narayan Singh directed issuance of a show cause notice
to his department employee Mr. Michael Fernandes as to
why disciplinary action should not be initiated
against him.
This is following a complaint filed against Mr.
Michael Fernandes, a resident of Ribandar for having
violated the Government of India service rules.
The complaint filed against Mr. Michael Fernandes
alleges that although being a government servant he
has been very actively indulging and involved in full
time politics and even supervising and monitoring
municipal work in ward no 30 where his wife Mrs.
Vinina Nasnodkar Fernandes was recently elected as
Corporator of the City of Panaji.
It has been alleged that Mr. Michael Fernandes has
been acting and operating as the de facto Corporator
while continuing to be a Government of India employee.
Mr. Fernandes it is alleged did not intimate to the
government that his wife contested/elected as
Corporator as is required by the government service
rules.
Mr. Fernandes has also been accused of giving private
swimming coaching classes for monetary gains in
clear and gross violation of the government employee's
service and conduct rules.
Meanwhile there has been intense political pressure to
hush up the case against Mr. Michael Fernandes. Will
the new Commissioner Mr. S.N. Singh have the spine to
resist this pressure. Only time will tell.
