Interesting... George, as usual, makes some useful points. What would
others suggest as ways to make World Goa Day more meaningful? Rene, we
take your silence as a promise that you will settle the issue of
origins of this day (and give credit where it's due) at the earliest
possible occasion... but not so early that it derails this year's
event :-)

Some questions to everyone, just to ponder about (and debate
endlessly, as is our wont as Goans!): How can the organisers involve
more people in such an event? How can an event such as this cut across
the traditional divides that have split Goans into eight or twelve
different communities -- by community, caste, geography, gender etc?
How do we celebrate that which is relevant to us all, instead of only
getting caught up in highly negativist perspectives (whether it's
about foreigners grabbing our land or migrants coming to take our jobs
and boost crime here)?

It's probably time for those interested to actively work to shed this
image (actually, it's true!) of Goans never being able to get their
act together, being very much prone to infighting, and being big
talkers and poor do-ers.

We at Goanet Admin have tried to take a supportive stance towards this
event, even if there are some thorny issues that probably need to be
ironed out before it can move further on.

So Goanetters, just go ahead and tell us what you can do to mark this
day, even if there's no Goan community around you, or you're 16ish and
hate the style your parents traditionally celebrate their Goanity, you
lack fluency in Konkani (for no fault of your own), or are stuck
somewhere in Antarctica (thank goodness that Helga and Joaquim are
back home!)

Just some suggestions. Everyone's addition to this list is welcome:

1. Review a book related to Goa (preferably one you didn't publish),
and circulate it online.
2. Buy a book by a Goan author.
3. Share a (preferably low-cholesterol) Goan recipe through cyberspace.
4. Try to understand something about a religion from Goa other than your own.
5. Start to build an alumni institution for your school in Goa (or the diaspora)
6. Write or edit an e-book related to Goa (it could be published someday).
7. Say good things about 10 Goans you know (don't forget others too).
8. Invest in a village magazine-library of your choice -- it's a
long-term investment!
9.Volunteer to build Goa-related information on http://en.wikipedia.org
10. Introduce someone you know to Goanet.

[The last one was a commercial, as in advertising for something one is
involved with. But we need that too!]

And let's keep reminding Rene about implementing his
footballs-for-Goan-kids idea (and what was the other one he
mentioned?)

PS: The list is obviously biased with my interests in mind. But others
could have lists with their own perspectives.

PPS: I'm really not very chauvinistic about being a Goan, and believe
it to be an accident of birth. In my next life, I would probably (and
going by probability too) be a good candidate for being a "non-Goan"
myself. Yet, it's nice, and warm and fuzzy, to identify with any
grouping, and help build social capital. But can we do this without
having to say derogatory and nasty things about The Other (i.e. people
who are "not us")?
