Drownings galore but who cares!
--------------------------------------------
Five drowning deaths in 18 days. These bare figures stare
at the authorities in the face and is a grim reminder on the
safety of tourists along Salcete's coast.

Red flags signaling danger zones are erected on Salcete's
beaches from Mobor to Colva but there appears to be no one
in sight to enforce caution.

And the absence of life guards for the last three days has only
made matters worse, with none of the authorities police, tourism
officials or tourist police around to guide the desi tourists.

Take for instance, Saturday's tragic drowning incident. Reports
say the 30-member group of 3rd year engineering students and
two teachers from Hyderabad arrived at Colva beach shortly
after 6.30 pm. When five members of the group ventured into
the waters, none of the authorities were present to advise and
stop the tourists from going into the sea.

Again, Sunday saw Colva beach playing host to a large number
of desi tourists who came in chartered buses from their States.
No doubt, the Director of Tourism has issued notices asking
tourists and locals to avoid venturing into the sea in the absence
of the life guards, but that hardly made an impact on the tourists.

Incidentally, Colva police says that the cops are aware of the
Tourism Director's caution, but appeared helpless in implementing
the warning. "It's impossible to patrol when hundreds of tourists
descend on the beach. Even otherwise, there are no takers for
any advise against swimming in the rough sea", maintained a
police official.

But, authorities admit that the deaths of five young tourists
reported in just a month off Colva and Varca is a warning
signal to save the situation.

In fact, the drowning incidents began with the death of young
railway electronic engineer from Hyderabad off Colva on July 24
when the trainees came on a study tour.
