Preparation for Jr Asian boxing get underway

PANJIM, AUG 29 – Preparations are in full swing for the Second Junior Asian 
Boxing Championship scheduled to be held from October 9 to 16, at Calangute.

The Goa-A Boxing Association (GABA) organising secretary Mr Lenny D’Gama said, 
‘’out of 43 countries affiliated to the Asian Boxing Council, some of the top 
teams Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Japan, 
Philippines, Thailand and Singapore have already confirmed their 
participation.’’
Mr Lenny said the Indian junior boxing team which also includes national silver 
medalist boxer from Goa Santosh Harizan, is undergoing an extensive training 
camp at Sports Authority of India, Aurangabad under chief coach Dharmendra 
Yadav and Turkish coach Safa.

He has confirmed that major venue arrangements have been done with 
collaboration of the Calangute Association who are extending tremendous 
cooperation and assistance.

He has also confirmed that SAG have been very accommodative and would be 
providing grants for organising the mega sports event besides procuring a new 
boxing ring besides the gloves and headgear and the weighing scales for the 
Championship.

The boxers and officials would be provided excellent hospitality as well as 
training facilities at Resorte Marinha Dourada at Arpora from where the 
participants would be transported to the Calangute Association grounds for the 
Championship.

Various organising committees have been formed under the chairmanship of State 
Sports Minister Pandurang Madkaikar, for the event. Chief Minister Pratapsing 
Raoji Rane is a chief patron of the event, Mr Lenny added.
Prof Anwar Chaudhary, president of the Asian as well as the World A Boxing 
Council is deputing senior executives and officials of the World Boxing Council 
to assess the Championship and it is expected in all probabilities that Goa 
would definitely be awarded a major World Boxing Event in 2007.
