In 1990, when Churchill Alemao became an unexpected chief minister of
Goa, thanks to the munificience of the MGP (of which the BJP ideology
was a tiny, concealed part), I recall an editorial in the Marathi
Gomantak, in which Athavale argued that if a Valyakoli could become a
sage Valmiki, then surely Churchill had a bright future. Of course,
this was an argument made for the sake of expidience, but the
editor-turned-Shiv Sena MP didn't know in what ways he would be right
