Selma and Mario,

Isn't Google great? However, in my searches, I get another reason for
enforced celibacy in the Roman Catholic priesthood. One of self
preservation which also explains their vehement opposition to same-sex
marriage. This link, albeit from a Lutheran perspective, implies that
practicing Christians expect celibacy from homosexuals.

Studies have shown that the percentage of homosexuality in the priesthood
is much higher than that of the general population.

Putting the two together is not my original idea. In this link from 2002
http://www.nationalreview.com/kurtz/kurtz061002.asp Kurtz comments on an
article by Mary Eberstatdt entitled 'The Elephant in the Sacristy'
outlining sexual orientation as the underlying basis for the Boston
Clerical scandal.

Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to read Bertrand Russell's take on
the subject but thanks for the lead.

Please widen the range of your reading material, which
perhaps should include books by notable historians and
philosophers like Bertrand Russell. In his History of
Western Philosophy, he details the reasons for strict
celibacy within the Catholic Church.

If you don't wish to read books which might offend
your sensibilities, use google. Here is an excerpt
from an article I found on google.
