Hi Peter
Thanks for your response on China and Russia. I have been following China's
serious failure on human rights reasonably closely but am not at all
uptodate on Russia returning to communist ways. If you have anything recent
on this specific Russian issue, I'd appreciate a reference. I am aware of
the mafia role there and the oil and gas boom which supplies much of Europe
now but would need to be persuaded that there is a significant return to its
communist past re religion and state socialism that I had witnessed first
hand. A lot of Russian billionaires make a bee-line to the UK and where
money speculation is now a great earner in the place of traditional
agricultural and industrial output.

My own hunch is that Russia may either seek independent military super power
status once again to compete with China especially, but there is also a
feeling in me that, alternatively it may wish to join the EU sometime as it
has a significant concern over a shortfall in birthrate/population while
surrounded in the south and east by states with expanding populations. The
EU would welcome such a move I think primarily because of Russia's massive
natural resources. The latter thought may sound absolutely crazy for now but
I had correctly predicted the timing and demise of the Soviet Union some
time before it actually happened.
Cheers
Cornel
