Gilbert, There are no "Mumbai" class destroyers in the Indian Navy. The INS Delhi, Mumbai and Mysore belong to the Delhi class, the lastest one, Mumbai, being commissioned in 2001. They were all built at Mazagon Docks which itself was retrofitted during the past decades with Soviet expertise.
I do agree with you though, that at 6700 odd tons displacement, 17 meters beam and equipped with anti-shipping and SAMs, torpedo launchers, a 100mm, 4 Gatlings and 2 choppers, it can hold it's own. There were quite a few Goan techies involved in Mazagon Docks which has had a large Goan technical complement for many years. They were the product of trade schools like Joseph Cardijn at Parel, Pe Agnel Ashram at Bandra and St Xaviers Technical at Mahim. Many of them were sent to the old Soviet Union and thereafter to Russia to be trained in the latest naval ship building techniques. It was odd to see these ace naval artificers doing state of the art work in the dockyards, building modern warships and then returning after the shift siren to their one room homes in Dockyard Road, Matharpakady, Love Lane and Nesbitt Road to the bottle and a plate of rice, curry and fish.
