To build or not to build (New Zuari Bridge) It seems our Govt is still unsure whether to build or not to build new Zuari bridge or perhaps, they are delaying in view of forthcoming general elections - they may want to include it in their election manifesto
3 months ago our PWD Minister Dhavilkar said two-lane 700 mtrs long new bridge over Zuari river will be built within 4 months at a cost of Rs.40 crore. Exactly 3 months completed now, no sign of new bridge nor any foundation stone laid. Yesterday, 17/10/06, NT on front page said 'Govt. drops parallel Zuari bridge plan' This is due to Central Govt. agencies declaring the existing bridge safe for traffic up to 12 tonnes so State Govt decided not to go ahead with the proposed steel bridge. It also said that the existing bridge will be thrown open to all traffic up to 12 tonnes by end of this month (Oct). Earlier, in July, it was also said the bridge will be open to all traffic by end of August. Today, 18th Oct, GT on its front page said 'Thumbs up to Zuari 4-lane bridge' State Govt. has decided to go ahead with the proposed four-lane cable-stayed bridge across zuari river. The 4-lane bridge will be built at an estimated cost of Rs.250 crore. Strangely, there was no mention of the above new bridge propossal on NT & H today Tomorrow (news), what ? 6-lane bridge ?
