Sunith is right. India has excellent undergraduate
professional colleges such as the IITs, IIMs and some
engineering and medical colleges of top universities.
However, as far as creation of new knowledge and
technology through research is concerned, these
institutions are highly deficient. There is simply no
comparison in terms of what is going on in these areas
at universities such as Harvard, Stanford, Princeton,
Yale, MIT, etc in the U.S.; Cambridge, Oxford, UCL,
Max Planck Institutes, etc in Europe; and some centers
of higher learning in Japan. The great Indian American
Nobel laureate Subramanyan Chandrasekhar had lamented
about this fact throughout his life.

The reason for the said deficiency is not lack of
talent or competence, but as with everything else, of
money and vision.

Cheers,

Santosh
