BASMA Bahrain Goans 7-a-side Football League

  Canacona stun 5 Men Navelim

Defending champions, Navelim began their campaign in the Basma Bahrain
Goans seven a side football league on a sour note. Not only they lost their
first match to Canacona with a 2-0 margin, but had two players (Ronnie
Rebello and Cyril Barretto) sent off for infringements on the field. Down to
five men, Navelim could not contain the attacking Canacona forwards. Last
years runners up scored their first goal early in the second half from a
defensive error by Navelim defender Martin and Biju Pappachan who was
lurking around slotted home from close range. In a desperate attempt, even
the goal keeper of Navelim Godwin Pinto moved up and played at the centre
line but mispasses and poor finishing eluded them an equaliser. Against the
run of play, Canacona who dominated the proceedings sealed the fate of match
with a goal from Hue Bert. At half time the teams were goalless.

In the other match new comers St. Anthony Siolim and St. Rock Verna played
fast paced soccer with fortunes fluctuating for both sides. Towards the
dying minutes of the first half Fortunato Vales took a rasping drive and the
Siolim goal keeper Frankie managed to block the shot but could not hold on
to the ball and Marcy Alphonso scored from the rebound. In the second half
Siolim came up with several goal scoring opportunities but could not pierce
the stubborn Verna defence. Stephen Godinho, a senior division player from
Goa made a perfect debut in Bahrain by scoring the second goal for Verna and
to seal the match 2-0. Nickson Adrian excelled for Siolim.

On Friday (20/10/2006) at the East Riffa open grounds, another new team to
join the league Mapusa will take on Colva 2Connect at 3.15 p.m and
Chinchinim will play Benaulim in the second match. The league is
co-sponsored by Gulf Computer Services and OTSC. In addition to take away
trophies the winners will also be awarded the Fr. Felicio Diniz Rolling
Trophy.
