Grand Final : ABC BENAULIM (EMIRATES ICA) 4 v/s
SIOLIM UNITED 1
ABC Benaulim emerged victors in the battle royale
defeating Siolim Undited 4-1 in the grand finals of
the Goan Inter-village football tournament organized
by Goan Cultural Society at Al Tayer stadium(Al Nasr
grounds) on Friday,October 20. Siolim United took
early initiative and made some brilliant moves on the
flanks through Peter Fernandes, Benedict Fernandes and
John Sequeira. In one such move, Peter Fernandes
brought down in box in 9th min. when referee awarded
penalty to Siolim. Max Fernandes took the spot kick to
put Siolim United in front. ABC Benaulim down with a
goal, made cautious approach and took some time settle
down. Their strikers, Benny Silveira and captain Roy
Das kept building up pressure at opponent goal. In
the 15th min. Benny Silveiras corner kick shot found
the net after beating the keeper Steven Pereira to
level the score 1-1. Both the teams made series of
attacks but could not break the deadlock before half
time. The entire second half belonged to ABC Benaulim
as they dominated the proceedings and put Siolim
defense under intensive pressure. In the 8th min.
Wolan DCosta scored for Benaulim with beautiful
volley to take 2-1 lead. Next few minutes, Benaulim
went on defensive to deny any chances for Siolim to
level the score. Benedict Fernandes made some
dangerous moves but Benaulim defenders Adler DCruz
and Russel Rosario kept the pressure off. Benaulim
showed more urgency and took control of the game.
Wolan DCostas 25th min.goal from close range
strengthened Benaulims claim for championship as
hapless Siolim United left without much time to make
come back. Instead, two minutes before the whistle
Roy Das scored another goal on Bennys cross.
Earlier, in the play off match Varca Sports Club
defeated Al Zuari F.C. 2-0 to clinch the 3rd place.
Jim scored both goals one in each half. In the
exhibition match , Bardez veterans beat Salcete
veterans on tie-breaker.
Mr.Francisco(Micky) Pacheco, Goas Minister of
Agriculture and Animal Husbadry who specially flew in
as chief guest for the grand event and joined by guest
of honor, Mr. Abul Kadir Yousur, Executive G.M. of Al
Nasr Leasureland, presented the champion trophy to
winners ABC Benaulim and runner-up trophy to Siolim
United. Mr. Benedict Fernandes of Siolim United
voted Player of the Tournament.
