AND LET ME TELL YOU: Nagaland did not join the Indian Union, when the state was formed. It was carved out of Assam, and so too were Meghalaya etc, though at different times. So all these places were already in the Union of India but under the hegemony of the Assam Govt. due to historical reasons. These people fought for their freedom from the Assamese and got their states, just like us Goans got our state. OK? In Australia I have a friend who is from Nagaland and is married to an accomplished German Australian; and in Calcutta I had a lady friend from Meghalaya who was so fond of me, that she wanted to marry me! The POINT I AM MAKING is that, non Goan people who are far from the borders of Goa did not know much about the Goan people and not about Goa as such. I was in contact with sons of illustrious families in N. India and from Bengal, in my earstwhile career, and I did discuss with them a lot about Goa and Goans, and enlightened them with famous and accomplished Goans at the time; little of which they knew about. Like they did not know that Frank Moraes was Goan; one however knew that Melville D'Mello the famous Reader for AIR was from Goa. They knew that Goa was under Portuguese rule and then liberated/ annexed? Little did they know that more than 50% were Hindu. So when Bandodkar became the first Ch. minister, these outsiders were completely surprised. They thought that Bandodkar was a Maharastrian; and that all the Christian Goans were mostly ABC's, and was the reason for their not becoming the Ch. Minister. This canard was prevalent from contact with the masses who worked in these jobs in Bombay and in Shipping and in the starred Hotels, as also adverse ignorant comments from Nehru to the Time Correspondent then, that he must have been talking to the ABC's in Bombay, that they were not in favour of Goa being liberated! As if people in these jobs do not have a right of vote or say in their preferences! When Goa voted for non merger with Maharastra, and later sought full stathood, these influential N.Indians felt that Goans perhaps liked Pakistan more than India. That I promptly refuted with all the logic and reason at my command; and then they understood. I said that even 'if accepted' that Maharastra is the language of Goa, then Goa must yet be a seperate State for cultural and historical differences! I asked why then Bihar and UP and MP are not one Hindi speaking state! On this 'reasoning' basis now of late, Arunachal Pradesh has been carved out of UP; and Bihar too is broken up, into Jarkhand and Bihar. So you see, my arguments and reasoning were ahead of these peoples premises! Thank you Bosco, for asking those questions; I have been able to clarify myself and have used the opportunity to further enlighten. See Ya! Nasci Caldeira Melbourne, Down Under.
