Globalisation Has Alienated The Poor, Says World Jesuit Head By SAR NEWS
BANGALORE, Karnataka (SAR NEWS) -- Globalisation has alienated the poor, said the world chief of the Society of Jesus, Father Peter Hans Kolvenbach. Global education has both positive and negative aspects. It is positive in that it is available as never before. Increasing privatisation is making it difficult for all to have it, he added. He was speaking at a function November 12 organised to mark the 125th anniversary of St. Joseph's College Bangalore, run by the Jesuits. He further said, "No matter what position you hold in society – civil servant, doctor, engineer – everyone must work to create a New India for the betterment of the poor. In St. Joseph's College no one should be denied a place. The college has contributed immensely in the field of education over the years and all have benefited from it." The superior general lauded the staff of the college for their research and commitment to impart greater values to students. St. Joseph's Bangalore, a premiere institution, was founded in 1882 by the French Fathers of the Foreign Mission. It was handed over in 1937 to the Jesuits dedicated to the education of young people. The institution is now managed by the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society. The college honoured 60 alumni in different fields, including T. Krishnamurthy, former Election Commissioner. The oldest alumni were from the 1936 batch. Father Kolvenbach also inaugurated the rebuilt St. Josephs Boys' School. The school was rebuilt, retaining its original design. The estimated cost of rebuilding is Rs 15 crore, a major part of it coming from former students. -- FN 9822122436 +91-832-240-9490 (phone calls after 1 pm please) _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
