There seems to be a numbers game of sorts in connection with the money put in by the Navy into Dabolim Here is the latest salvo as reported by NAVHIND TIMES (Dec 3): <He also stated that the navy has assets of Rs 75 crore in Goa and Rs 1,000 crore has been spent on infrastructure....It was also informed about Rs 40 crore is being spent to enhance the runway itself.> Meanwhile HERALD of the same date notes: <Claiming that the Navy has spent around Rs.75 crore to upgrade facilities at the Dabolim airport, Rear Admiral Vadgaonkar said that [it] has also spent around Rs 40 crore for expansion of the runway which is extended to 3.1 km to cate to any aircraft.> So far so good.
Interestingly just a few months ago I myself heard the hon Rear Admiral on TV saying that the Navy had sunk Rs 75 THOUSAND crore into Dabolim. On goanet I had observed at the time that this was way above the Rs 25 THOUSAND crores estimated earlier in a goanet post in late 2004. Now we have Rs 75 crores and Rs 1000 crores which adds up to, not 75,000, but Rs 1075 crores (only). How does one explain the disparity in numbers. If we cant get facts right at Dabolim, how can we expect facts to prevail over pre-conceived notions in Goa? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Goanet supports BMX, the alumni network of Britto's, St Mary's and Xavier's -- three prominent institutions in Mapusa, Goa.
